For this modern home in Zwartebroek, Silvio Vermeer Studio developed a planting scheme that renders the transition between architecture and landscape virtually imperceptible. The planting blends in with the open surroundings and ensures that the house blends naturally into its green surroundings.

The garden comprises a rich mix of perennials, ornamental grasses and trees, which together create a natural and layered look. The variation in texture, flowering and foliage results in a vibrant landscape that is constantly changing throughout the seasons.

The surrounding landscape also forms an important part of the design. Space has been set aside here for a mixed flower bed, which creates a colourful and flower-filled transition to the surrounding landscape whilst also providing food for insects and other animals.

A distinctive feature of the landscape design is the combination of a wadi and a toad pool. This depression collects rainwater whilst also creating a valuable habitat for flora and fauna. A birdwatching hide has been erected by the water, from which birds and other animals can be observed in peace and quiet.

Alongside aesthetics and the user experience, biodiversity therefore plays an important role in the design. The various biotopes – ranging from flower-rich planting to water features and tall trees – enhance the ecological value of the landscape and provide an attractive habitat for birds, butterflies, bees and other animals.

The result is a landscape planting design in which the house, garden and landscape come together as a single whole. A natural outdoor space that not only provides a place to live and enjoy life, but also gives nature room to thrive.
